Goal of the transcription editor

This editor facilitates the transcription of audio files. The editor can be used online and for free.

What does the editor have to offer?

Audio controllable via keyboard

Audio playback can easily be controlled by user-defined keys. No hand needs to be removed from the keyboard to play or pause playback, or to replay the last sequence listened to.

Insert timestamps

In order to be able to easily find the location of a text passage in the audio file, timestamps can be inserted in the text. This is possible via the keyboard as well. The user can choose whether to set the current position as the timestamp, or the beginning of the last sequence listened to.

Transcribing conversations

Transcription of interviews and other conversations is made easier. Speakers can be inserted simply by clicking on the speaker name in the list of speakers. If there are only 2 speakers, the editor can be set to automatically start the new paragraph with the next speaker after pressing Enter. This allows efficient transcription of conversations with only 2 speakers.
For each individual speaker, it is possible to deactivate that they are taken into account when automatically setting the speaker after a line break. Thus, the automatic speaker change can also be used when transcribing conversations with more than 2 participants, but only 2 main speakers.

Word completion

It can happen that long and complicated words occur frequently within an audio file or across multiple audio files. Writing them out each time can be annoying, time-consuming and error-prone. To avoid this, such words or phrases can be saved under "Word Completion" and during transcription the initial letters can be completed automatically by pressing a predefined key.

Automated formatting

For sections, speakers, timestamps and the heading, you can specify how they are to be displayed. If one of these elements is inserted, it automatically gets the formatting set for its kind. If the formatting is changed for a kind of elements, it is automatically adjusted for all elements of this kind. Unfortunately, individual formatting of single elements is not possible.

Dark mode

For using the editor in the dark, it may be more comfortable for the eyes to switch to a darker user interface. This is possible in this editor.

Saving and loading settings

To avoid annoying cookie banners, the settings are not stored in cookies. To avoid having to redefine settings every time you use the editor, you can save them locally as a file and open them again later.

Limitations

Few formatting options

This editor aims to simplify and speed up typewriting, but it offers few formatting options and no auto-correction. Therefore, it may be useful to copy the text into a word processing program after transcription in order to put the finishing touches to it.

No autocorrect

Some browsers offer autocorrect, but some do not. Especially in the case of transcriptions that are forwarded to others, if the browser does not provide autocorrection, the text should be copied into a word processing program with autocorrection before submission.

Laggy text input

If the length of the text is large, entering new text can get sluggish. This seems to be due to the implementation of the used HTML element in some browsers. To prevent this either Firefox or Safari should be used or the text should be copied into a word processor and deleted from the text field when the input starts to get jerky.

Only save in HTML format

Currently, the written texts can only be saved in HTML format and possibly as PDF via the print function.

=> Recommendation: Texts created via this page should be copied into a word processing program after completion. There they should be reformatted if necessary and saved in the desired file format.

For whom is this editor interesting?

The editor is interesting for anyone who wants to convert an audio file into text. Examples of use include the transcription of interviews, conversations for market research, job interviews or lectures. In addition, it is often also more convenient to first record texts via a dictation app on the smartphone and type them out later.
